Sometimes when you open an excel file from Sharepoint document library you the file opens in Internet explorer using excel services !! if excel services are not configured correctly for this document library then most probably you will get an error such as:
The workbook that you selected cannot be loaded because it contains the following features are not supported by Excel Services
There are 2 reasons for this issue:
1- File type for excel is set to open in same window, and do the following to resolve it:
in Windows XP , open Explorer then click on Tools > Folder Options >File Types tab > XLS or XLSX click on Advanced and Uncheck “Browse in same window”.
2- you don’t have enough permissions to open the file
If you have “View Only” permissions on the sharepoint site or document library then you will not be able to open the file or download it localy on your machine.
to slove it, give “Read” permissions to the users and they will be able to open the file using excel client.
For more info on how to see permissions you havefor users and groups in your site go to: Site Actions > Site Settings > Advanced Permissions
Good luck!!
